I’d like to start by saying this; you and your mates can try this one out yourselves. It started sometime when I told Mitch that a girl who had walked past our campsite was definitely called Sarah. So I said to my school chum Mitch, “Yo Mitch – that’s Sarah from school. Shout her.” Mitch, like the maniac that he is, began shouting “Sarah! Sarah!” At this poor girl, who looked befuddled and concerned (she was probably high, too) – she turned back and yelled “I’m Caroline!” making me laugh as I had tricked old Mitchy boy successfully. Then a conversation broke out amongst the people at our camp – there must be loads and loads of Sarah’s trotting about at the Festival, so if you kept calling each girl Sarah, then you’d be bound to come across a bona-fide Sarah. But at the opposite end of the spectrum, would a person named David be more likely to occur? The game therefore began as such – two teams, two names and a mass of people to sift through: which team will discover their chosen name first? Our campsite, being located at the edge of a busy walkway, was near a heavy traffic of people walking up and down, which was convenient for the purposes of the game. Both teams tried frantically to find a ‘Sarah’ and a ‘David’, leading to some dodgy reactions and the alienation of all people not bearing the necessary name. The method of finding the people of the chosen name was simple – the name was called out as such, “Yo Sarah / David!!!!!” and the reactions of the people being shouted were observed. Think about it - if you hear someone shout your name, you’ll look to see who called, won’t you? This simple fact is the foundation of the game. It was surprisingly difficult to find either a Sarah or a David. But before too long, a Sarah emerged from the ruins – but what to do now? Sarah was found and the massive build up to this moment meant that the suspense was immense. There was a moment of hesitation before full-scale celebrations broke out, which, I hasten to add, both teams took part in, showing true sportsmanship. Sarah was encircled in a dancing, chanting frenzy – everyone wildly chanting “Sarah! Sarah! Sarah!” Understandably, Sarah was slightly taken aback by the reception that she received. “Do I get an explanation?” She asked, tentatively – so we explained. Was it all over, after discovering a Sarah? The answer was no, it most definitely wasn’t. Finding Sarah had spawned a new idea amongst our crew. Well, to be honest, Sarah spawned a new idea herself and she was spawning absolutely all over the place so we said goodbye to her. But she left us, amongst all that spawn, with a new name to go and root out. I can’t remember what the names were that we subsequently searched for, but what I do know is that the game was shortly hijacked by Walley, who decided to find girls with the names of the Spice Girls (Emma, Geri, Victoria and two Melanies). There was clearly an ulterior motive to his plan, and it certainly wasn’t a Spice Girls reunion. |
