Harry talks to Chico backstage
Harry talks to Chico backstage

It's Chico time!

By Harry Aslam
Party in the Park 2006 was graced by a whole host of top musical talent – including former X Factor contestant Chico. I caught up with Chico after his performance...

Looking at Chico's on stage antics, I think it's fair to say that being in Leeds got him pretty excited – so I asked him straight: Chico, how much do you love Leeds?

"I love it! I live in London and sometimes I don't get that excited. But when you go to new places, you see new faces and you get excited. It's not the place, it's what's in the place, and I met some really wonderful people."

He shouts it out, loud and proud. Well that's it then. Leeds may not have a Premiership football team but it certainly does have the love of one of the nation's most popular former X Factor contestants. Come on Leeds, be proud!

It turns out that Chico has a surprisingly philosophical take on his recent success as a pop star:

"You can't just take, take, take. Because, yeah, that's great, but it's just a temporary fix."

Chico is involved heavily with children's charities and something which he is keen to discuss is the new charity that he has set up with a friend to care for orphaned children in Cambodia.

"The music industry feeds your ego – but this stuff feeds your soul."

Chico's enthusiastic performance

Chico's performance was nothing short of 'enthusiastic' – he thrust his pelvis almost incessantly and he says that this enthusiasm is a "built in mechanism".

When he gets on stage, Chico explains: "…something else takes over. When I see myself on video, I look at that person and go 'that's not me'. It's another person."

So is that time the time that he calls Chico time?

"Absolutely. Chico time, disco time and in three months time it's going to be Christmas time!"

No, Chico, we're in July. In three months time it'll be October. But despite that miscalculation – good show, Chico.
