This fantastic result for the club has been achieved through a culmination of tournaments starting from early April running up to the national event. The knockout tournament consisted of 22 teams from across the UK, with the top teams from Leeds and London likely to battle it out for the National title. Saturday games With league winners IF not making a showing at nationals, Leeds took the top seeding. The first game was against the local Southampton second team and it didn't take Leeds long to settle into the game and take the early lead. Although Southampton managed to score three points, Leeds remained clinical on offence and confident on defence and won the game 17-3 in just over an hour.

The second game of the day - and quarterfinal - was against Southampton's first team, who also qualified for the World Championships later in the year. With a larger squad then their second team, they were going to be tougher opposition. Leeds maintained their form and Southampton struggled to score against a tight man defence. Leeds pushed on to take the game 17-4. Sunday games The semi-final was against Brighton 1, and with high expectations for Leeds - being the favourites to go through to the final - this would prove a tough game. Both teams traded out the start of the game and Brighton held on to the disc patiently. Leeds needed to up their defence as Brighton were living up to their reputation as a team with big throws and coming down with some great grabs for scores. Brighton remained strong and took the half 9-7 to the huge disappointment of Leeds. After a fired up team talk from the captain, Christian Nistri, Leeds came out and put in a big performance that forced Brighton to turn over. Trading points was not enough for Leeds, and they stepped the intensity up to get some defensive blocks. Leeds battled to the end and took the game 17-11. A very scrappy semi-final, but Leeds had come out top and were now in the final - although needed to play a lot better to be in with a chance of winning the title. The final saw Leeds matched against the London team Rampant X who had defeated Bristol in an equally as exciting semi-final. Both teams traded out the start of the game, but a clinical Leeds offense and strict defensive strategy aimed at shutting down Rampant's long game forced the London team into two early time-outs to rethink their strategy. After taking a 6-4 lead, Leeds lost three successive points that saw the London team go 7-6 up. Rampant maintained the lead to take the half 9-7. After half-time the trading continued, seeing the score reach 11-8 in Rampant's favour. With twenty minutes of the game left to play, the Leeds team knew it was now or never to put their mark on the game. Showing true Leeds determination, the northern team scored two successive points – the second of which saw Leeds claim three defensive blocks against the London side. With the Leeds team looking to have found their feet again, a crucial block from Joe Graves (in a point that also saw him assist the score) meant that at 11 all Leeds were well and truly back in the game. Leeds continued their goal run to take the lead 12-11. London finally scored the next point, and with full-time blown the winner was to be the first team to reach 14 points. With a fired up sideline shouting encouragement, the Leeds team entered the cap on offence and scored their point comfortably. With the Nationals title in sight, Leeds stepped it up on defence and forced a pressured Rampant to turnover. A quick play on the disc before Rampant had time to set up their defence saw Mark Fulford chase down a long throw for the final point. Victory and the UK National title to Leeds! Christian Nistri, Captain of the team said "This is a fantastic result and one that everyone should be proud of." Winning the National Trophy however is only the first step for the team and later in the year they will be travelling to Australia for the World Club Championships in Perth. Here they will need to put in strong performances against teams from across Europe, North America, Australia and South East Asia. Vice-Captain Sally Fraser says "We are right where we wanted to be at this stage of the season… now we need to use this win to spur us on to achieve even greater success this year". The non-worlds team, Locomotive Leeds eventually finished 6th after losing to Southampton first team in the 5th place play off. |
