Jail craft

Review by Amy Noden
Our reviewer, Amy, thinks going to see the musical is even better than watching Bad Girls on the telly.

Bad girls The Musical has an all star cast and it is taken from the hit television series. It is an all-singing and all-dancing performance. It is very funny and it will have you in stitches.

The stage is set to represent a block in a prison. The stage is on two levels, and moves around for different scenes. There is a live band for the music, and their presence made the performance more dramatic.

The stage is full of strong characters and I enjoyed them all, every one of the cast can sing and made the characters believable to the audience.

Nicole Feraday played Shell Dockley both in the musical and in the TV series, she played the ring leader through the first half and bullied one of the new inmates, Rachel hicks, played by Elaine Glover star of Footballers' Wives. Both these characters were very much like the TV series and I enjoyed watching them.

Hal Fowler played Jim Fenner, Jim likes to run the prison his own special way. he calls it having “jail craft” . Jim takes the inmates for granted which ends up in leading to a tragedy, this makes all the inmates start to wonder... Hal played Jim very well.

All together I really enjoyed the musical I would recommend anyone to go and see it.

It was really funny and had you hanging on to what was going to happen next. The use of the lighting, stage, and technical side of the production was very well thought out and worked well with the story line.

The production does have a lot of strong language and sexual nature to it. I would not recommend it to families with children.

Bad Girls The Musical: Book by Maureen Chadwick and Ann McManus, music and lyrics by Kath Gotts, directed by Maggie Norris.

West Yorkshire Playhouse until Saturday 1 July 2006.
