Roundhay Park
Roundhay Park: Green space in Leeds

How well do you know Leeds?

By Sam Pritchard
I thought I knew Leeds. I'd seen the outskirts (the location of my halls), I'd seen Headingley, I'd seen the University and I'd seen the city centre. So what else was there to see?

About Sam

I was born in Surrey, grew up in Berkshire and was a boarder at Monmouth. I currently divide my time between homes in Sussex and Pembrokeshire and University in Leeds, where I’m in my first year studying Geography.

I’m rather partial to coffee, flying, music, performing arts, photography, politics, theatre, travelling and wine.

Well, as it happens, there was quite a lot still to see.

Yesterday I went on my first field trip. Being a Geographer, you'd think I would spend most of my life on field trips. But no, I'm a Human Geographer, so I don't measure pebbles or analyse soil. I'm more interested in people and urban landscapes.

Our task was to visit a few different locations in Leeds and compare them. After getting on a bus near Primark, we were heading north east. About 20 minutes later we got off the bus. We were in Roundhay Park; a hidden treasure. Why on earth don't the students go there? Beautiful scenery and acres of green space make Roundhay Park the ideal location for a run, cycle or, in a few months time, a sunbathe. Excellent.

We did a bit of happy snapping before heading over to Alwoodley. Again, I was pleasantly surprised.

Then onto Headingley, a place we all knew. Fortunately for us (but unfortunately for the residents) we found a lot to compare with the other places we visited. Headingley boasted vandalism, bad road surfaces, little green space, an incredibly high rate of litter and we even witnessed police rushing to the scene of a bank robbery.

Is it a coincidence that the "rough" area we analysed happens to be the area where most of the students live?

Even so, it still seems to be a lively community with a lot going for it.

Whilst travelling between the sites I was able to make use of my bus pass. I wonder how many students actually use their bus passes for journeys other than the daily commute to and from university. There are all sorts of places to see in Leeds. If you happen to have an idle moment or two, hop on a bus. You never know what you might find!

Meanwhile, I have found her house to live in next year. It's a quaint little terrace in the Hyde Park area about 15 minutes walk from university. All I have to do now is learn how to cook. Marvellous.

Ciao for now.
