Earth from the Air

Millennium Square is set to become a 24-hour art gallery this autumn. The stunning Earth from the Air exhibition will be in Leeds from Thursday 15 September - Wednesday 16 November 2005.

Facts

Yann Arthus-Bertrand was born in March 1946. At the age of 30 he moved to Kenya with his wife Anne to study lions in the Maasai Mara Reserve and began to photograph the beauty of the natural world, flying over the landscape in a balloon.

Earth from the Air was a massive project for Yann. He spent ten years carefully researching the landcapes he has selected, flying over 76 countries and clocking up 3,000 flying hours by helicopter.

With over 100,000 shots in the collection, Yann has chosen the 160 exhibits to communicate his own vision.

The free outdoor exhibition is a spectacular presentation of over 120 large-scale aerial photographs of breathtaking views of our planet taken by world-famous photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

Arthus-Bertrand's mission was to create a photographic record of the natural world at the start of a new millennium. Taken from all over the planet, the 160 photographs chosen for the exhibition tell a story about our changing planet and the need for sustainable development.

Taken from the air, the pictures show a bird's-eye view of the extraordinary patterns and colours created in landscapes all over the world. Some are the result of human activity - farming, industry or habitation. Others are entirely sculpted by nature itself.

Seen together they are an outstanding visual testimony to the world we live in today and show how human activity, population growth and technological progress have made dramatic changes to the world's landscapes.

Earth from the Air has already been a huge hit wherever it has been displayed in Britain (including dates in Birmingham, London and Bristol), as well as other cities around the world.

The exhibition information centre and film viewing area will be in Millennium Square providing visitors with fascinating earth facts and useful ideas about how they can make a difference and help preserve the planet for future generations.

Earth from the Air, Millennium Square, Thursday 15 September - Wednesday 16 November 2005 (a display will also be at the Light shopping centre for two weeks from Saturday 15 September). The exhibition information centre (including gift shop and fair-trade cafe) is open daily 10am to 6pm.
