Heroes welcome

Leeds author, JR Endeacott has just published his second novel, "No More Heroes" on his own publishing imprint - Relish Books. He's hoping that more bookshops will commit to stocking books from local authors.

The follow-up to Leeds author JR Endeacott’s impressive debut novel, "One Northern Soul", is now available. "No More Heroes" hopes author and publisher Endeacott (the main man behind Relish Books), will be the catalyst to encourage Leeds book sellers to commit to stock and support home-grown talent.

"With the big publishing companies seemingly less inclined to take risks on new talent, the field is wide open for small publishers to bring the public fresh, original and entertaining writing" says Endeacott. "But they need book shops to stock their titles and, with young publishers like Relish, this means persuading national book chains to take a chance on titles that aren’t part of the big head office marketing plan."

"No More Heroes" is currently available from the Leeds branches of Waterstone’s, but Endeacott says that the book trade as a whole is slow to support local authors:
"Sadly, other book shops have been disappointingly slow to follow suit. We’ve managed to interest individual branches of the large retailers but the response in general has hardly been overwhelming.

Branch managers don’t seem to be allowed to make certain decisions on their own – it always needs some boss hundreds of miles away at HQ to decide. And where local literature comes into question, the decision’s usually a big NO."

No More Heroes
JR Endeacott's latest - No More Heroes.

"No More Heroes" follows JR Endeacott’s first novel, "One Northern Soul", also set in Leeds and currently under consideration for TV adaptation. Described as a touching home-grown tale of friendship, faith and football, "No More Heroes" is a coming-of-age story which charts more experiences of Leeds youth, Steve Bottomley, during the 1980s. A story of friendship, flirtations, family, football fanaticism, faith and other words beginning with ‘F’!

JR Endeacott, 40, lives in Leeds. Most people know him by his middle name of Robert; the J stands for James. In his time Robert has worked for a mail order hamper company, a satellite TV broadcaster, and finally a mobile phone network, before packing it all in.

Whichever career, he never quite made it, despite promising signs early on. In 2001 he took redundancy and studied for a Screenwriting MA at Leeds Metropolitan University. His first novel, One Northern Soul, was published by Route in 2002 to enthusiastic reviews. No More Heroes is the sequel, the prequel and the…'equel'.

The 93 Albion Street branch of Waterstone's in Leeds is hosting a Launch Event for "No More Heroes" on Wednesday 29 June 2005 from 7pm. All members of the public are welcome.
