Rhinos plan for the future

Leeds Rhinos signalled their intent to build for the future by signing up two of their promising young stars to long-term contracts.

Leeds Rhinos have confirmed that they have signed two more of their brightest young stars on long term contracts with the news that England prop Nick Scruton, 20, and full back Lee Smith, 18, have both agreed new contracts with the club.

Smith, who made his first team debut earlier this season and has already scored four tries in five games, has agreed a four year contract whilst Scruton has signed a three year deal.

Scruton has become an established member of the Rhinos squad this season having made 11 consecutive appearances until a recent shoulder injury has ruled him out for three weeks. He spent three months on loan at Hull last season where his form earned him a place in England’s successful European Nations Cup winning side.

Commenting on the announcement Head Coach Tony Smith said:
"It is great news, they are both talented youngsters who have broken their way into the team this season. They will certainly play a further part this season but these long term deals mean that they will have time to develop over the coming years to become even better players."

"Nick is a tough young man who works hard. He has had a few set backs in his career with injuries but he has a real hunger to develop and learn as a player and that will stand him in good stead for the future."

"Lee Smith was the Senior Academy Player of the Year last season and he has stepped up a level this year. He is very talented and whenever he has been given an opportunity he has grabbed it with both hands. Both players have a bright future at the club."
