The Grand refurbishment pic: Andy Paraskos
A complete transformation is underway

A Grand transformation

A major Leeds landmark, the Leeds Grand Theatre, is in the middle of a full renovation and the creation of a permanent home for Opera North. Julie Langford of BBC Radio Leeds was invited to take a special look round the building work.

The 1,550-seater Grand Theatre has dominated New Briggate since the imposing building was erected in 1878.

The last performance at the theatre was Blood Brothers on Saturday 28 May 2005 and work began in June 2005.

During January 2006 Julie Langford was taken round to look at the progress of the work, and you can hear her two reports for BBC Radio Leeds on this page. You can also check on progress by looking at the photogallery of pictures taken inside the building.

The theatre is expected to formally re-open in September 2006.

Phase two - restoration of the Assembly Rooms and the theatre's facade -  begins in June 2006 and is expected to be completed in the autumn of 2007.

The overall project cost is around £32m (phase one £21m, phase two £11m).

Major financial support for the project comes from Arts Council England, Leeds City Council and Opera North. Donations have also been received from over 40,000 individuals.

Once the second phase is completed the Assembly Rooms will be open to the public for the first time in over 30 years and will be restored to its original Grade II* listed Victorian splendour. It will provide a 350-seat performance area and rehearsal space.

I can remember the dark days of the late 1960's when the theatre was sometimes closed. I was enticed into the Leeds Amateur Operatic Society by a lovely redhead called Pamela. They apasrantly needed vagabonds for Rudolph Friml's Vagabond King. At rehearsals I didn,t get anywhere near Pamela but I had a wonderful time at the Grand for two weeks (including matanee's). I followed this with La Vie Parisien before moving south for a job with the BBC I marveled at the shear size of the theatre, and I still think it is one of our best theatres nationally

Having spent many a night watching shows of all types from ballet to opera to the good old days of The Whitehall Farces. We returned to NZ in 2003 but will be returning to the UK in 2006 and hope to be able to con someone into letting us see the inside if the theatre before we return to NZ. Keep up the good work. See you next year all being well. Tony & Carol Norman. New Plymouth NZ. PS The barmy army have just left town, having being here to support the Lions. This will be fantastic for Leeds and for Opera North, as well as all the other companies who perform at the Grand. I'm looking forward to seeing the inside of the Assembly rooms, and hope that the project will include air conditioning for the main auditorium of the Grand - it can get very hot up there in the gods!
