Weird Leeds

The Grand
The Grand

Ghostly goings-on at the Grand

Listen in as BBC Radio Leeds' Abi Jaiyeola takes a trip around the Grand Theatre in Leeds. Abi feels a bit spooked down in the dark cellar.

The 1,550-seater Grand Theatre has dominated the end of New Briggate since the imposing building was erected in 1878.

Abi was shown round the building by Steve Rushman from the Grand.

Steve has worked in the building since 1982. Their tour took in some of the old workshops underneath the theatre and the main part of the building including the balcony where some people have seen a 'grey lady' and smelt the scent of lavender.

Steve says, "People have seen things, heard things. It's just an old dark place down here.

"Ive heard footsteps... but have never really seen anything."

Steve also talks about a possible ghostly sighting in a picture recently taken by surveyors inside the building. Was it spectacular proof of a haunting or an April fool?

The building is closed at the moment as a major renovation takes place but this page includes 360-degree panoramas of the current Grand.
