Lucas Radebe
The Chief: Leeds United's Lucas Radebe

Lucas Radebe: The original Kaiser Chief

South African defender Lucas Radebe signed to Leeds United from the Kaiser Chiefs in 1994 and is celebrating 10 years at the club with a testimonial season.

Lucas Radebe facts

Date of Birth: Saturday 12 April 1969

Birthplace: Johannesburg, South Africa

Height: 6' 1"

Position: Defender

Squad number: 5

The testimonial, Leeds United XI (past and present) v International World XI, is on Monday 2 May 2005 (kick-off 3pm). Such is the respect for Lucas Radebe that the game at Elland Road is fast approaching a sell-out.

Meanwhile, Radebe is still in touch with his former Johannesburg football club and is pleased at the success of the Leeds band named after them in his honour.

He says: "I do listen to their music. It's a great honour to be associated with things like

A testimonial match is planned for Monday 2 May 2005 and has already caused controversy following the reaction of some fans to Alan Smith's possible return to Elland Road.

The Chief has always been a favourite with United's fans and the admiration is mutual: "I always try my best. I think the fans are part of the team and the club... without them there is no Leeds United."

Following injury, Lucas Radebe has only managed to play a couple of reserves games this year and intends to retire at end of this season.

He says: "I've got no regrets. It's been a great career and I've got a lot of memories to go away with."

Once Radebe has stopped playing he's not sure what the future will hold but he intends to carry on his charity work (he has worked with Leeds City Council in twin city Durban and is an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages in South Africa) and would like to become more involved with coaching and youth football.

How does Lucas Radebe hope to be remembered at Leeds United? He says: "I think people will always respect me and know how I've contributed to the club. Hopefully they will take it from there and with the attitude and everybody else's support get the club to where it belongs."

Lucas is an inspiration and a legend. While his testimonial was a fantastic day yesterday as I'm sure 38000 people can concur with, it was also tinged with sadness to think Leeds are losing such a great man. I hope you come back to visit us from time to time Lucas, you will be missed enormously.

Matthew Round

What a legend.Possibly one of the greatest servants ever to football and a loyal and humble man who is Leeds through and through.A player with a big heart who gave always gave it 110% unlike many around him. Definitely would have been one of the greatest centre backs ever if he wasnt hit by injuries. Cheers Lucas for all your work within football and Leeds United and not to forget your service to the youth of Leeds. Hopefully you can play a few more this season and either continue playing next season, or help the young Leeds players and stay on as a coach. Good luck with whatever you do in the future, We will never forget you. Legend

Paul Lacey

lucas has been one of the best foreign player leeds united have ever brought to leeds, he is such a kind and unassuming man, he has the utmost respect from everyone because he gives the same. he is a man who will live long in the memory of leeds united.I met him when he first came to leeds. as his house was round the corner from mine and i have to say if all leeds players were as nice as Lucas then we might be in the premiership, instead of the money grabbing players who want to be with other clubs.long live loyalty

Jordan Newby

phil salmon
will always remember your goal in europe lucas. it has very happy memories for me and i guess thousands of other leeds fans. thank you chief, for your loyalty, and charity work, good luck chief love you .

'Bunmi Aina
When you talk about examples of what loyalty really means, Lucas is the first player among the many who have graced the hallowed Elland Road turf in the colors of Leeds United over the past 8 years or so who's been the living definition of it. While others have jumped ship while Leeds collapsed, he took a pay-cut to stay on and help stabilize Leeds United. In retirement, Lucas's defensive clinics will be sorely missed! But here's wishing him a wonderful and productive life after he finishes playing. I hope Leeds can find a place for a brilliant servant in the backroom.

You are a legend! I remember you scoring a thumping header at the back post in a uefa cup game against locomotive moscow in front of the kop. It was on 83 mins and we won on away goal rule (2-1 in away match) WE WENT MENTAL. Hope you can do that in your testimonal - we will sing all game for you lucas. You will never be forgotton and hope you are still involved at Leeds somewere.

Kirk Baker
Lucas is a true professional and would be sorely missed should he decide to leave LUFC. I'm sure there's will always be a role there for him at Elland Rd. Maybe there should be a statue of him alongside the late, great Billy Bremner???

Damon enney
I hope you have a brilliant testimonial (hope You Score) It would be nice to see some of the best players in the world playing at Elland Road. Hope you've injoyed your football at Elland Road we'll miss you in the future. Good luck

Stu Hirst
At a time where football is soured with greed and complete lack of loyalty or moral fibre, Lucas has been the model professional. His charity work continues to be testament to his character and he will be remembered as a Leeds legend.

Andy Brookes
im 15 and your easily the best world player to come out of football i would love you to stay at leeds as a coach or go to africa and advise players to join mighty leeds

Daniel Twiddy
I think Lucas Radebe is a true legend, a very rare specimen in the modern game.

Christine Yates

ronald howard swindon wilts
lucas has been a good player for leeds utd for many seasons

Colin Harrison
A star in the true sense of a word that is so often used about those undeserving of it. During all the highs and lows of Leeds United over the past 10 years, he has never once complained, just got on with the job. I think the fact that he was prepared to take a pay cut following relegation says it all. We'll miss you, Lucas

Good luck to Lucas, he has been an inspiration to may people outside football. To us Leeds fans he will always remain an icon, he is everything we hope for from a Leeds player. I always feel that he wore the shirt with pride and if only we had been able to say that about a few more over the years! Lucas is a true professional in every sense and will be sadly missed at Leeds.

Singe Saunders
I met Lucas at a South West Whites dinner not long after he had arrived here and was impressed by how humble he was. Great guy , Great smile , Great player.

i'd just like to thank lucas, he's been a great ambassador for leeds and football as a whole. after reading about the charities he is raising for im proud to say such a man graced the yellow and white of leeds. he will be sorely missed. thanks lucas
