Band Club

Find out more about this local band.

ARTIST/BAND: Band Club
BASED IN: Hyde Park
BAND MEMBERS:
Pete Foster - dreamy bassist
Chris McKendry - nerdy irish guitarist
Samantha Reid - vocals/slag
Tim Wheeler - naturist drummer
Steve Darke - charismatic frontman
BEEN GOING SINCE: October 2003
BIOGRAPHY: Chris and Pete met over the internet... Sam lived with them, and a token girl was required. Steve got tired of seeing bands he could write better songs than, and joined the forces. Tim was the most talented musician the band knew, so it made sense to ask. After months of sporadic rehearsals the band play their first ever gig at the Packhorse on 10 March.
STYLE OF MUSIC: Brilliant... really really good.
INFLUENCES: TV On the Radio, Death Cab for Cutie, The Smiths, Mogwai, Ballboy, Pulp, My Bloody Valentine, The Postal Service, The Futureheads, Pete Tosh, Pavement, Outkast, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Modest Mouse, The Polyphonic Spree, DJ Shadow, The Pixies, Brendan Benson, The Flaming Lips, Joy Division, The Velvet Underground, Love, The Lemonheads, The Shins, The Delgados,  The Buzzcocks, The Clash, Half Man Half Biscuit, Dexy's Midnight Runners...
FAVOURITE SONG: Shine by Aswad - arguably the finest single by a British reggae outfit, released in the mid nineties that refers to Ian Wright as 'a champion fee-wee'. BEST MOMENT SO FAR: Writing 'Shattered Dreams Make Great TV', a one way ticket to Top of the Pops.
OTHER INFO: Band Club are lining up a series of gigs for late April 2005.

Band Club Rule - Be apart of the Band Club fan club!

Dave Benson Phillips
Steve who?

Steve Brookstein
I take offence at that.

Dave Benson Phillips
Great to hear that band club are back in action again. Will personally be travelling from London just to hear shattered dreams one more time. Stuff the x-factor. This is the real deal!

Liv and Char (Steve's cousins)
Hello, just like to say that we listened to the unofficial band club cd with the family and suprisingly really enjoyed it (steve's usually appauled by the music we like). Looking forward to hearing more 'anthems'from them in the future. Especially loved 'Shattered dreams make great TV', have been singing it all day! Hope to catch up with you soon steve! xx

Band Club....just confirmed for Saturday 16th July at the Leather bottle, Wimbledon. and it is free for ther geogpahically and finanically challenged. See you there

Aswad
Watgwan. Was down Pack Horse last night just in time to see nuff goodness from me new favourite band. Respect to the Club! Ye'll go far, me hearties, if ye'll keep it together. As for me, I seem to have turned into a pirate. Ting!

Daveyboy
any news on the london gig?

Luke
Stumbled across the gig at the Fenton and thought they were ace. Great jangly pop songs with a frontman who is an absolute star in the making. Top stuff.

Vocalist Samantha Reid
I would like to say a big thank you to all of the lovely Band Club fans who have made it to our recent run of gigs. Our last gig for the foreseeable future will be on 16th June at the Packhorse and we would love to see all of you there, along with some new faces of course. It's a special birthday show for Steve Darke, and it will cost just £1 in to cover overheads. Supporting us will be Jenny Smith and The Jetties, and Amyas Varcoe. We will hopefully have spent some time recording in a studio by then, and should be able to sort you out with a cd, should you wish to re-create the Band Club gig experience at home. That's all I think. Over and out.

Little Miss Indie
Saw the santiagos gig and thought you were SUPERB. Not very often you see a local band and still have their songs stuck in your head a few days later, but why no website. I want some pictures of the frontman and the bassist- FIT.

Jonny Boy
Saw the vine set - Band are ace, frontman sorry mate you dont have what it takes step down, find a decent lead and let the rest of em shine. Good effort

nERDY chris' sister
haha, private joke there, well alright then, when chris was wee he was scared that a pike or shark could somehow get into the bath and bite off his w*lly (small, well he was 7)

Nerdy irish guitarist's big sister
P I K E !!!

Chris Mckendry
Hey everyone. We headline (!) at the Vine on Saturday the 28th of May. Should be a belter. Get yourselves down there, and don't forget the Fenton on the 2nd of June!

Dago
I'm one of many long-distance lovers of band club (in the sense that I love them, not any other sense; as a future housemate of a band club member, I think it best if I stay out of any steve/pete/chris/tim debate - although whoever called steve handsome obviously has no idea how rarely he washes that mop of hair). I must confess to being one of the crapest band club fans as I have never been to gig, although I do read the emails with zeal, enthusisam, and open-mouthed amazment. Anyway, apologies for the non-attendance, my geographical positioning in our nations capital makes for a troublesome stalker-like relationship with band club, but that said, I have to say that there is no doubt in my mind of band club's talent and array of hairstyles, which obviously make for a fabulous stage presence. One day I will put my optimistic theory to the test and actually attend a gig, probably sooner rather than later as I'm due a couple of visits to the north over the next month or so. I hope to at least be 'dago of honour'.

Charismatic Frontman Steve Darke
If you e-mail us at bandclubfanclub@hotmail.co.uk we should be able to sort something out. Lovely.

Paul
I've heard good stuff about Band Club, but they don't let you into Leeds Uni without a student card do they? Is there any way i can get in?

Gary
June the second, my band, Gary and the c's, will be supporting band club at The fenton! Please come along all band club fans, my c's are wicked!

Nerdy Irish Guitarist Chris Mckendry
Want something to look forward to after the Exams? Fear not! the lovely Band Club will be headlining a very special end of University celebration on the 2nd of June at the Fenton, the day before the summer ball. Support to be confirmed, but it should be an absolute bloody belter.

Charsmatic Frontman Steve Darke
Ello. For everyones info, last night we got called by the Vine about four hours before we were due on stage and told the gig was cancelled. Thanfully with the help of the Salvator Darlings we managed to throw together a replacement show at the Cardigan Arms. We tried to let as many people know as possible, but if you went down the The Vine then we apologise profusely. The whole manic nature of the venue change did lead to a somewhat off colour performance from us (we'd all be the first to admit), but thanks a lot to everyone who came along, we hope you still all had a belting night.

Chris Mckendry
Hello Fans! Just booked another gig at the Packhorse for Thursday the 16th of June. We should also have plenty of other gigs between now and then, and will post the dates when confirmed.

Dreamy Bassist Peter Foster
Don't worry Andy, we're something entirely different from just about everything else out there. A bit. We have a few gigs lined up, we'll post them here as soon as possible so you can hopefully get to one.

Charismatic Frontman Steve Darke
Fingers crossed we'll have a gig at the Wimbledon Festival in the first week of July. It's very much in it's embryonic stages at the moment, but i'll keep you all posted.

Andy
Hi, nice to see your influences are of some great bands, im from bradford would like to see you play, i presume you will be playing around the leeds area! hope your not like kaiser chiefs, bloc party and all the other sh**e thats around lately!!

Tom Foster
When will you be making your debut in London for those of us who are geographically challenged?

Tatt
Chris is just trying to boost Darkie's reputation as a gay icon.

Chris Mckendry
What can I say? He's got a great arse. I'll try and appear less obvious next time.

Retailer of the Year
My top five favourite words I associate with Band Club are: Well-worth-my-train-fare. Epsom town hails its newest poet. I can also thoroughly recommend watching 'the guys' on a full stomach of lasagne.

Indie Chick
Good show but word of advice for the guitarist - STOP LOOKING AT DARKO'S BUTT! It looks either as though you have stuck the music on there and you are just playing off that, or you have a weird infatuation with mens bums!! Bootie-watching aside, I think yous are great and I will definately be at the Vine for your next gig. PS - on the Pete/Steve 'debate' Im sorry but its no contest, Steve wins every time!!

Tom
Unusual to see a bass-driven band, that guy's pretty good. Enjoyed myself a lot but not sure about the Aswad influence! And the female singer is definitely fit.

Dreamy Bassist Peter Foster
I'm sure you'll all be delighted to know that the lovely Band Club already have their next gig lined up: Tuesday 19th of April at The Vine in Leeds, supporting the equally lovely Salvator Darlings. For those who missed the Packhorse, be there. The rest of you, I imagine, need no encouragement.

Jim
Token girl? She was the best one!

A & R Dude
Not knocking the overall performance guys. Thought a touch of realism would be apreciated though? Better sooner than later. I'd suggest working on the vocals. Good set though. Be humble, nobody likes an ego head. I'll watch out for you & hope to see your next gigg if im in the area.

Jenny
Good all round performance, especially the drummer. Could go far, though the frontman needs a bit of work, sorry to say this but he sounded like he was smutting his own balls for the first couple of songs though in fairness he did improve.. Overall i give it 8/10

Prof
Bah, sorry I couldn't be there on Thursday. Will definitely be trekking across the Pennines after the holidays though. Impressive feedback after one gig peeps. Kisses.

Adam J
I saw the gig and thought it was pretty tight for a debut. Good performances, especially the drums and bass. The front man is a funny guy too. Good stuff, I will definitely keep an eye out for you.

Mikey Mike
Ah. A & R men, trying to break up potentially brilliant bands before they've even begun. One of the things i really enjoyed about watching the "club" on Thursday was that they were just that. They played for each other. You really got the feeling these were good mates who were all out to have fun. I'm not saying the frontman shouldn't practise vocally, he should, because he has the makings of a genuinely brilliant leader. Samantha was vocally very accomplished but perhaps needs to build up her stage presence. A couple of tweaks, and they could go a long way.

Jeff
Ah, A & R dude, somebody wants to impress Samantha don't they? The frontman doesn't need to practise at all, if he's the one who writes those songs he should just keep going. That 'Shattered Dreams' song was the best thing i've heard since Pulp split up, and the track they closed with sent shivers. Samantha was good though too.

Nurton
I like to think that I am responsible for much of Steve's musical influences from the 2002 era. I am glad that everybody seems to have enjoyed the gig. I hope for the greater good of the bands future that Steve did not think it "a good idea" to launch into a rendition of the Smiths.

The Singer From The Salvator Darlings
I was there man, I was there. I truly believe myself and the others who were fortunate enough to witness the first live appearance of Band Club saw music history being made... There's no doubt that Steve Darke is ready to take over the world along with his group of talented musicians, the question is, is the world prepared for Band Club?

Tri-er
Never did I think I would find a band that could replace Worlds Apart in my heart but I'm pleased to say that from this moment on I will be adorning my walls with posters of the startlingly good looking Band Club

Garry Sudan
...and thats how I lost my job as a backstreet taxidermist. Ah, band club, I didn't see you there, but I did see you at the Packhorse and I thought you were A C E, ace. I look forward to your next gig.

Chris "not that nerdy" Mckendry
Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who came to the packhorse last night(thurs 10th)hope everyone had lots of fun, the band certainly did! Cheers!

Macca
The whole steve/pete debate is rubbish. It's chris where it is at. I've been dreaming of chris playing the guitar in my room for years, this is closest i'll get...

Tatt
The Pete/Steve debate - I am one of the few both-ers. Seeing them together at the Packhorse will make my dreams come true, although probably not the one about them mud wrestling in brightly coloured underwear.

Mike
Sorry to be missing the party. Undoubtedly will be the greatest showing since Steve's incident with the old woman and the bath towel.

Dave Richardson
As a young boy i had always know Stephen "Darkie"(no, he's not black) Dark would be a major influence on the british music scene. His memorable moments as leeds' best dj and now best producer have led the way for his outstanding songwriting panache to flood out of every orafice. This will indeed be seminal. ps. can someone tape it for me i live in bristol.

Eloise
I'm disappointed to find no photos of you on the webpage - you can never have enough pictures of steve. I trust this will be rectified before too long?

Frances
Ah, the Pete/Steve debate. I'm afraid i'll have to disagree Claire, i'm a Steve-er.

Alex Payne
what, no arty, middle distance staring band photographs?

Ellie
Never before have a band hyped up their debut show this much before, but i'm actually really excited. Steve is intelligent and handsome enough to possibly become some future icon... having said that, they might turn out to be sh*t.
