Leeds' astrological chart: Trouble at mill

By Tricia
Leeds-based astrologer Tricia looks at how the stars reflect turbulent times for our city.

About Tricia

Tricia is Leeds born and bred, and has studied and practised astrology for over thirty years.

She uses both western (vedic) and eastern (yotish) methods of astrology. Tricia is a member of BAVA (British Association of Vedic Astrologers) which promotes vedic astrology.

Tricia says: "An old Yorkshire saying still used by Loiners is 'trouble at mill' and certainly in 1626 this was just as true. The charter was obtained by leading Leeds city merchants desperately trying to resolve conflicts between traders and merchants.

"Tempers flared fuelled by rights to free passage being violated; by 1753 Leeds city witnessed many angry turnpike riots with one in June that year, renowned as the 'Leeds fight', culminating in Lord Harewood sending out soldiers to shoot at the hundreds of angry protestors, killing eight of them and wounding 40, many of whom subsequently died of their wounds.

"Not only is this type of riot promised by ruler of sixth house of disputes on the ascendant, in the natal chart, but Jupiter,(ruling nobility) and Saturn (ruling 'commoners'), were transiting opposite each other during the year these riots culminated. By June 1753 Saturn had just turned retrograde in Capricorn the fourth house of land and landed interests, giving the workers more power to fight for their perceived rights.

"Mars ruling the seventh house of friendship was in the sixth of rivals and enmity, ensuring mass disputes and predicting the riots of the times. Uranus was also in the sixth showing that these riots would flare up suddenly when activated by a Martian transit.

"The sixth also rules the military and it was the militia from York who were called out to deal with the rioters. The king piece on the heavenly 'chessboard' during the 'Leeds fight' is Jupiter in a powerful, exalted position in the tenth house of Cancer, so of course the nobility and wealthy merchants won the dispute.

"In 1753 Pluto was in the third house of the chart while Uranus was in the sixth and both currently move through these signs again… Will such riots happen again in Leeds you may ask?

"Well, there has been a massive ongoing protest over the ever increasing cost of parking in the city. Intriguingly, during these past five or more years, while Pluto and Uranus have returned to the same positions as during the riots, the council has also been floating the idea of imposing further tolls on city road users, like those introduced in London.

"While Saturn is currently in the tenth of Cancer, the council will find these measures very unpopular and will face strong opposition from the public sector, but later in the year when Saturn moves into Leo for two and a half years, it does suggest that new laws will be brought in to impose an extra tax burden on city road users again…"
