Think pink

Everyone loves a festive party, but not everyone wants to get drunk. Mocktails are non-alcoholic cocktails, allowing you to enjoy all the fun and excess of the season and wake up the next day without a sore head.

We visited three Leeds bars to discover what mocktails they offer. It looks like non-drinkers in the city can enjoy some creamy and fruity tastes and the fashionable colour this season is most definitely pink.

At the Wardrobe, head bartender Richard made us a Berrymelon Smoothie. This contains half a scoop of ice, fresh watermelon, blended strawberries and raspberries, yoghurt, honey and cranberry juice.

Next we sampled a Dairy Fairy from Charlotte, senior bartender at BRB.

This tastes like a strawberry milkshake and includes fresh cherries, sugar syrup, strawberry puree, cream, milk and glacier cherries to garnish.

Brad, bartender at the Hard Rock Cafe, concocted the Apple Eye – a mixture of cream, apple juice, grenadine and ice, served in a martini glass garnished with apple and cinnamon.

Big pants or tiny knickers?

In a bid to promote responsible drinking amongst women, this Christmas the Methodist Church has launched a competition to find Britain's best mocktail recipe.

The standard they have set is the Big Pants mocktail. Taking its name from the Bridget Jones films, this is an alcohol-free concoction with crushed ice, orange and mango juice, ginger ale and a dash of grenadine.

Entry forms for the contest to discover a new mocktail to top Big Pants are on postcards available in Leeds cinemas and on the Mocktails website (see link on the right). The winning recipe will be called Tiny Knickers.
