Avoca

Leeds band Avoca have a myriad of different influences. Read on to find out more.

ARTIST/BAND: Avoca
FROM: Leeds
BAND MEMBERS:
Claudia Mansaray - vocals
Lisa Mistry - vocals
Gary Jones - guitar
Andrew Woodhead - guitar
Karim Nasir - drums
Peter Hill - bass
BEEN GOING SINCE: July 2004
BEST MOMENT SO FAR: The best moment so far has got to be us all getting in a practice room together and playing through our first song and realising how amazing it sounded and how well we vibed/played together.  It was a good feeling knowing that we could produce such a funky, lyrically sound song.
STYLE OF MUSIC AND INFLUENCES: Formed in Leeds  this unsigned act has a plethora of influences ranging from James Brown to Zero 7. Double female lead vocals come in from different angles, working to create a crossover folk/soul style, which compliment each other perfectly. The band is held together by a spontaneous funk, afro dub, jazz influenced rhythm section, allowing the two melodic and sometimes freaky guitars plenty of room to explore. The overall sound really draws roots from each song's original beginnings, whether it be folky, phat, freaky or just pure funky.
SONG YOU'D MOST LIKE TO COVER: We're mainly trying to focus on writing our own material at the moment but a song that we've all agreed would be pretty damn cool to cover is Summer Romance (antigravity) by Incubus. How funky is this tune?

If you can get hold of a copy of this bands 3 track demo then you'll be suitably impressed. They haven't tied themselves down to a genre which is refreshing. Its about time that we had something different in the Leeds music scene. I think this band is one to look out for.

Andy Bell
I think Avoca are brilliant, especially their gorgeous bassist and drummer!! Mmmmmm!

Yasmin
I've heard a couple of the bands demos and their sound is funky and soulful. I'm looking forward to hearing them play in leeds

Mark
My mate played me a few of your songs. They where good. Are you definetly playing at the Primrose on November 12th and if so what other bands are playing? Are they a similar genre

Sinead
Avoca are a pretty funky band. I've seen them do a few acoustic gigs at Dr Wu's and thought they were cool. I think they have a gig at the Primrose on November 12th.
