Going lomo

By Cat Hope
My interest in lomography began with a little plastic camera from the Lomographic Society called the Supersampler.

This unusual looking camera takes 4 sequential panoramic shots on a single photo. The camera has no focus settings, no flash, and a plastic popup viewfinder which you are encouraged to snap off and simply 'shoot from the hip'.

"I still get excited when a set of processed pictures come through the post..."
Cat Hope

Following this advice my resulting shots from the Supersampler were colourful, exciting, and always unexpected. The excitement of receiving my developed images not knowing what I was going to get was addictive.

But the Supersampler alone wasn't enough. Through the Lomographic Society website I had discovered the tool I really needed, I had to get my hands on a Lomo Compact Automat (LCA). Raving about this little point and shoot camera obsessively for months resulted in my boyfriend kindly buying me a LCA for Christmas, and I have been filling it with film ever since.

The Lomographic society centres around the LCA, which has a long and complicated Russian history which resulted in the camera being demanded all over the world. The love for this little camera was so strong that when the Russian factory threatened to end its production the Lomographic Society stepped in (with the help of Vladimir Putin) and convinced the factory to continue production based on the demand for the camera that they could ensure.

Today the Lomographic Society has over 230,000 online members uploading new images daily. The members take photos alongside the 10 rules of lomography and upload the images to their own personal space on the site. Lomographic Embassies exist all over the world and regular national and international competitions are held, online and offline.

I take my LCA everywhere, it takes normal 35mm film, has a manual focus, automatic or manual exposure and a crisp wide angle lens. I sometimes load it with slide film and have the slide film processed as normal film, providing exciting and unusual effects. I also have a special coloured 'coloursplash' flash for further fascinating results.

I took me a few films to get used to the camera, but I still get excited when a set of processed pictures come through the post because every set contains some amazing photographs. I upload my images to my online lomohome for the whole world to see.
