Does news of war affect children's lives?
Children finding out about the war.
Children finding out about the war.

We see the war on television, see it all over the newspapers and just about everywhere! How does it affect our lives at home and at school?

This is what Chanse found out.

FACTS

A parent at Shakespeare was concerned about the safety of his child on a school-trip to the City centre because the child was born in a middle-east country.

Teachers at Shakespeare have had to stop children from making nursery rhymes and playground games about the Iraq war!

Most of the children at Shakespeare watched the toppling of Saddam's statue on television and many of them have been talking about it in school.

The 'Chanse' Interview!

"War and its effects on people at home!"

I asked a pupil in Year 6 called Leanne about whether the war is affecting their life and this is what they said,

"It doesn't really effect me because it's not like I'm going to war, but it would effect me if one of the people out there was my brother".

I asked what it felt like to see pictures of Iraqi children injured and hurt and in the conditions that they're in? Leanne replied,

"Sad, because you wouldn't like to see a picture of your brother and sister being hurt like that".

What sort of pictures have you seen? I asked,

"People getting carried away with awful burns all over".

I also asked, how would you feel if that was your brother fighting out there?

"Upset because he's risking his life saving other people".

I asked Leanne what she thought about the war being all over the newspapers and on the TV for most of the time?

"I get bored and fed up of Iraq being on television all the time with, 'its Iraq this, and Iraq that', that I wish there was a channel just for the news."

My final question was whether Leanne thought we were doing the right thing by stopping and helping all the injured Iraqis?

"Stopping to help little children is OK, but not all adults, because they're stronger and are more capable of surviving. ...We want the war to finish as soon as possible!"

War is effecting all our lives, but is war really worth it when so many people are getting killed or injured?
