At Shakespeare Primary School, all the children of year 6 have been learning about road safety on bicycles.

Some children brought their own bikes and those children that didn't have bicycles borrowed a friend's or teachers bike. Mr Gorton, Mrs Palin, Miss Brown and Mr (cycling mad) Harberd brought in some strange looking bikes including a fold-up bike. However Mr Harberd didn't bring in his banana bike which he rides smoothly, relaxing on his back.

"I wore a helmet and a bright, illuminous yellow bib! I stood there on my friend's bike and felt excited at the thought of cycling on the roads for the first time." said Cherraine.

Boy riding his bicycleWe played games on the playground riding our bikes. The instructors, Mark and Pete, told us to cycling around and when they shouted "Stop!" we had to stop immediately without skidding or the back wheel rising.

Jodie said that, "It was easy! I pulled both brakes at the same time and I stopped suddenly, but safely."

"I pressed just one brake, the right one for the back, and the sound of skidding tyres was really loud and screeching. The bike spun around and it was funny. The next time I did it, I did it right." said Nikesha.

We rode our bikes out of the school playground, down Stoney Rock Lane, turned left onto Torre Road and right into the Ebor Gardens estate. We practiced our hand signals and our life savers.

"Life savers are when you look behind your right shoulder to see if there is any danger behind," explained Annika.

Year 6 children said it was a day to remember and was a very valuable day for us. With the summer coming up we feel safe enough and confident enough to cycle on the roads.

Remember, always stay on the left-hand side of the road.

Remember, always protect yourself by wearing a helmut and using your signals and lifesavers.

Remember, always look, listen and be aware of other vehicles on the road.

Remember, always walk on the left hand side of your bike to protect yourself.

Remember, cycling is fun but can be dangerous if you are not careful and sensible on the road.
