Sam the clay man of Harehills. This is Sam. He is a magic man... a man of music, of theatre and opera... a maker of strange and beautiful Jewish music.

But to us, he is Mr Paechter ...otherwise known as Sam the clay man!

When you come into our school, the first thing that you'll see is a wall full of tiles which together say the name of our school - "Harehills Primary School" and shows children holding hands. We're really proud of it. Sam helped us to make it. Go down the corridor and you follow more amazing tiles that Sam has helped us to make. Follow the beautiful claywork all the way down to the clay area where there is a group working with Sam now.

"Pottery is very good, it is excellent to do pottery ...it is fun." says Akeela.

At the moment Akeela is making a clay model of the local Mosque.

"I drew the Mosque (on paper) first. It was really good. One person made a castle and the other five people made Mosques. It is really good to make a Mosque ...It is interesting. We put our thumbs inside to make the domes. We drew the moon and stars on our Mosques. I drew mine on the dome because I thought it might look nice." Akeela

Anisa agrees that it's great fun to work with clay... "I enjoyed making the arched dome and cutting the hard clay with a knife!"

At our school everyone gets the opportunity to work with Sam at least once a year. Anisa continues..."When I was younger I made a dinosaur and in Year Two, I made a clay figure of myself. In Year Three, we made a life-cycle of an animal ...Oh, and in Year One we made candle holders".

We'll show you a gallery of the clay work soon, when it's ready that is!

In the meantime, we just want to say, "Thanks for making our school a great place to be in Sam!"
