High-rise self-expression

My name is Bernard Hare and I'm one of the founder members of the Flatlands Community Arts Group.

Find out why we thought such a group was necessary.

FACTS

Persons who hold themselves in high esteem are less likely to engage in destructive and self-destructive behaviour including child abuse, alcohol and drugs abuse, violence and crime

We cannot always avoid negative thoughts, but one of the secrets of mental balance is being able to notice when you are 'choosing' or 'allowing yourself' to think negatively rather than positively, and keeping an eye on the way your lifestyle affects your mood.

We started the group, mainly because of the type of area we live in. This area has one of the highest death rates in the country, high unemployment and more than its fair share of social problems and deprivation.

The group believes that some form of self-expression is essential to human wellbeing. My mental health has improved because of the group and other members definitely seem perkier and more confident about themselves.

We decided that our first project would be to put together an illustrated book, with a music CD attached, as this would allow the widest range of people, writers, artists and musicians to contribute.

The area is famous for its decorative Burmantofts Pottery, which was produced here from 1859 to 1922. The 'Kiln' pub in Stoney Rock is a reminder of our pottery heritage.

We wanted to show that we're not all divvies around here. We're not thick. We can actually do stuff, even if that means getting out of bed before three in the afternoon.

Mainly though, we wanted to give ourselves a voice. Many people hereabouts feel disenfranchised, forgotten, betrayed and believe that currently they have no voice.

I've talked to many people in the process of setting up the group, normal people, local residents. Many of them are either unhappy, depressed, stressed, frightened, addicted to one thing or another, ill, in debt, dazed, confused, angry or a combination of them all.

I believe that the arts help people to cope with the stress of modern life. If you don't express yourself, you go mad.
