Setting up our wormery

Tired after setting up our classes new edition!
Building our wormery was hard work. You need to make sure the worms settle in so that they can make compost for you. Here's how we set up our wormery.

FACTS

Bacteria help the worms to break down the food during composting.

Worms don't like citrus fruits like oranges and lemons.

1. Make a house for the worms, you can get one from a wormery company or the coucil may have some.

2. Put damp newspaper at the bottom of the wormery to stop the worms falling out.

3. Sprinkle water in the bucket of worms.

4. Pour the worms into the house carefully.

5. Sprinkle more water on top of the worms.

6. Close the lid because worms don't like light.

7. Leave the worms to settle and do not disturb the worms - tell a teacher if someone is opening the lid.

8. Put fruit and veg scraps in every week.

9. Wait for a long time and you will get compost.

Question: Why should people have a wormery?

Answer: So you can make compost for your flowers, and so you can recycle your scrap food.
