  • The structured and angular environment of the railway station sets the backdrop for these urban-based dance moves. The train station is a place where there is a constant flow of people passing through; arriving, departing, waiting for trains. These natural movements are brought to the fore and amplified by the choreography, as the dancers weave amongst the passengers in a space that's never still. There's the tide of commuters clogging up the stairs, the criss-crossing of passengers wheeling suitcases back and forth, people repeatedly checking the time, watching the board, hunting their pockets for the ticket they think they've lost.

  • Dance - repeated patterns - creating a motif to show to a friend and develop into large group/class movements. Dance - lots of focus on floor work using the people on the floor of the station to inspire - development of working in unison, control of body shape and of timing. Drama/literacy - freezing the film and focusing on individual people: can you tell their story? Who are they? Where are they going? What are they doing? What are they thinking? Dance/Drama - use of props - development of the use of props to tell a story or to inspire movement motifs (chair, bag, suitcase, mobile phone, newspaper etc). Geography - compare and contrast the environment of the station with the farm. The aerial shots show a clear form of geometric pattern which brings a ready link between maths and dance. The clear blend between the natural life of those on the station (e.g. sitting on benches, watching the clock) and how these are turned into dance allows children to see a connection between dance and the real world such that the art form becomes an expressive extension of the real world rather than something totally tangential to it. The closing sequence ends the dance and is a clear ending point, children need to appreciate that whatever media they are working in, be it dance, film or written work, a clear concluding sequence is key.
