The Sonoran Desert - over-extraction of water
The Sonoran Desert in the South West of the USA has been inhabited for many years. Water is becoming scarcer so strategies are being put in place to conserve it, such as a reduction in farming. The impact of over-extraction of water in the desert is severe and includes land subsidence and loss of wildlife and habitat. The endangered species act is now preventing new building developments in the area and the existing settlements are becoming unsustainable.
