The Queen's Silver Jubilee
Melvyn Bragg looks back on the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Despite a backdrop of economic uncertainty and social unrest, the nation celebrated with a year of festivities. An estimated 10 million people attended street parties on Jubilee day, 7 June 1977, going 'Union Jack-crazy'.
Pupils could be asked to research differences and similarities between Britain during the Queen's Silver Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee? Or, whether they feel it is appropriate to hold national celebrations during a period of economic uncertainty?
