  • Moll, the storyteller, explains how she has come to be placed in the stocks. On the previous Monday she was at the theatre to see Shakespeare's new play Romeo and Juliet. She has a passion for the theatre and would go on stage if she could, but in Tudor times only men could be actors. Moll visits a tavern with her friend Robert, one of Shakespeare's actors. Robert will be playing Doll Tearsheet in his next play and he shares some of that character's famous insults with Moll. The next day Moll is back at the theatre to watch the actors rehearse their sword fighting. But she arrives to find that the theatre has been closed by the Lord Mayor. Moll is unable to stop herself from quoting some of Doll Tearsheet's insults to the Lord Mayor... and so she is placed in the stocks.
