Key Info
  • Dance - inspiration from the library
  • Duration: 06:34
  • The quiet sanctuary of the library is the backdrop for a series of dance movements based on a literacy theme. The library might appear quiet and still, but there is movement here. Readers turn pages. Sitting around a table, a group tussle over books. Behind the stillness is the private world each reader inhabits, and here those moments are acted out. There's the temptation to bend the rules and break the silence, to make books into stepping stones and to turn the spiral stairs into a cascade of books.

Ideas for use in class
  • Dance - challenging the concept that dance is a whole body experience and has to involve travelling. Use the clip of four around the table to inspire children to focus on gestures using only upper body and hands. Dance - using a book as a prop children have to create a movement from one place to another in order to pass the book on to another person. Literacy - finding out about different book genres (fiction). Literacy/ drama - using the clip to then inspire the children to create movements which encapsulate different book genres/types. Literacy/drama - the use of facial expressions to tell a story. The dance on the staircase shows clear teamwork and would be a good opening clip to show in a PSHE lesson.
