The crisis in Zambia's copper industry
The economic slowdown in 2008 - 2009 has made a big impact on the copper industry in Zambia. Zambia's economy depends on copper exports, but mines lie disused and workers have been laid off. The global economic slowdown has caused a collapse in the copper price. Reporter Komla Dumor tours an abandoned mine and explains how events in Europe and America are affecting this part of the developing world. This clip was first published on BBC News Online on 9 March 2009. Please note this clip is only available in Flash.
The clip perfectly illustrates the problems of a one-product dependency for students at 14-16. Older students could research copper prices over time (carry out a web search for copper + price + trend). Annotate a graph of copper prices with ideas for possible influencing factors.
