The court hearing of Anders Behring Breivik
Richard Galpin reports on the hearing of the first open hearing of Anders Behring Breivik who was the perpetrator of the Norway 2011 attacks. The court agreed to holding Breivik in prison until the full trial. Interviews are conducted with survivors of the attack. Breivik told the court he was part of a resistance movement fighting against Norway's multicultural society. A re-cap of the killing spree first shows the impact of the attack on the main government buildings in Oslo and then on the targeting of an island killing almost 70 people with the aim of driving all Muslims out of Norway and Europe.Contains some scenes which some viewers may find upsetting.First broadcast on BBC News Europe online in Nov 2011.
This could be used as a starter for a lesson about sentencing. It could also be used as a way of suggesting the difficulties of creating a multi-cultural society, in terms of what drove Breivik to commit these acts?
