The changing seasons - Grass
This clip shows how grass copes throughout the different seasons. It starts with the presenter recapping from the previous year and explaining how he noticed a bare patch in his garden so he sowed some grass seeds. An animation is shown which explains how the roots and shoots grow and that watering the grass helps it grow. The presenter shows how he has to cut the grass in the summer. In the autumn he notices how the grass has stopped growing and in winter the grass is not dead but just stops growing. However in springtime the grass is shown growing once more. The clip shows that animals who graze are given hay to feed on through the winter. At the end the presenter recites a poem summarising the video.
Visual of grass growing, the diagram of the shoot will certainly reinforce the learning.
This could be used alongside growing grass in the classroom, collecting different grasses on the school field accompanied with what grass needs to grow.
An experiment in the school field could be carried out as a follow up from the episode of leaving a part of the field to continue to grow, and investigate how many different types of grass grow in the area, use the internet, reference books to find the names of them.
