Key Info

  • The clip opens with children listing their favourite stories from the Old Testament. Painter Peter Clare talks about why he chooses to depict scenes from the Bible in his work. One of his favourite stories is that of David and Goliath, which is then dramatised by an actor. The theme drawn out is that of God's strength, and how Christians believe that, with God, they can overcome any difficulties.

Ideas for use in class
  • This could be used within a number of contexts, e.g. as an introduction to the stories found in the Old Testament, as part of an exploration of the nature of different parts of the Bible. The example of the story of David and Goliath could then be explored. Reading the story from a modern translation or children's Bible would be useful before or after viewing. What words would you use to describe David's God having read the story? How might reading this story help Christians in their lives? Alternatively, the clip could be used as an example of how we can use the arts to express our religious beliefs. Other artwork depicting Biblical scenes could be explored and students could then develop their own artistic interpretation of a story, e.g. David and Goliath. Encourage pupils to express religious truths and ideas through the artwork - how could they show God giving his strength to David, for example?
