Sitcom 'Bottom', 1990s
Opening titles sequence introduces the crazy world that Richie (Rik Mayall) and Eddie (Ade Edmondson) inhabit and their London location. On Christmas Day there's none of the traditional festivity in Richie and Eddie's flat, just an atmosphere of poverty and dysfunctional behaviour. Richie's attempt at dinner is a disaster, served up with bad jokes. The grand finale is the blazing Christmas pudding. Featuring often gruesome slapstick humour, the sitcom was written by Mayall and Edmondson and loosely follows up the characters they first played in 1980s alternative comedy 'The Young Ones'. The series ran on BBC Two from 1991 until 1995, and this episode attracted 6.29 million viewers.
A study of slapstick humour could go back to the silent movie period. Consideration of its continued popularity and international appeal.
Look at stunt humour and the creation of student pieces. Students could produce their own sound effects.
