Nelson Mandela’s trial
Mandela's lawyer and then Mandela himself reflect on their approach to the trial of 1964, essentially to use it as a platform to set out their beliefs and ideals. Other leaders on trial with Mandela are also interviewed. Mandela’s lawyer also makes an interesting point about white South African attitudes towards Mandela, essentially that he was a terrorist. First broadcast in Mandela: The Living Legend on 3 March 2003.
Can students see why Mandela was seen as a terrorist? Is that how they see him? Ask students if they are aware of other situations in the world today in which different sides regard the same person or group differently.
