Manufacturing composite car body panels using CAD
The production of lightweight car body panels is demonstrated, using a CAD machine to produce a foam mould. Moving from the computer-aided design stage to the prototype production stage, different materials can be used for the production of the machined piece. Softer foams are easier to work with, but denser and harder foams produce a more durable prototype. The machined piece might then be sanded and finished with paint before being used as a mould. The construction of the composite car body panels is then discussed, building up the different layers of the composite to give a panel with the desired properties.
