Key Info
  • C P Cavafy - 'Ithaka' (audio)
  • Duration: 02:14
  • The poem describes the long journey that is required to reach Ithaka. The author warns the reader, who may be Odysseus, or a timeless imaginary traveller, that it is the journey that counts and not the destination. The poet comments upon the length of time that will be required for the journey, the obstacles that may be met and the wisdom and items that may be gained along the route. The author concludes by warning the traveller that whilst Ithaka should always be in their mind, it should not be thought of as the ultimate destination as it will doubtless fail to impress. The whole piece thus raises associations with Odysseus' ten year journey home, as written by Homer.
