Islam - respect and care in the family
An explanation of the importance of the family in Islam, including the foundational role of the mother. It looks at a multicultural Elderly Care Centre in Glasgow and how this project reflects Muslim values and promotes tolerance.
Students should consider the different needs of people at different stages in life and how they should be treated. They could list five needs for children (e.g. 5-7, 11-14), for parents and for elderly people. Then give five ways in which these groups could be treated to meet those needs.
Watch the clip. Explore the needs of these groups from the Muslim viewpoint. To what extent does the Glasgow centre meet the needs of the elderly? Write a letter to the Director of the centre as if from a Muslim family, expressing their gratitude and explaining which Mulsim values they think are being expressed in their care of the elderly.
