Key Info
  • HIV and AIDS in South Africa (pt 2/2)
  • Duration: 04:03
  • The South African government has been criticised for its response to AIDS. Treatment with anti-retroviral drugs is discussed, as is the government's failure to introduce this treatment more quickly. However, the government has improved healthcare provision making it free to the poor, has started a childhood vaccination programme and has introduced more rural clinics. In areas which are difficult to reach, it is hard to recruit and keep medical workers. Many people in rural areas turn to traditional healing. AIDS is robbing children of their parents but is also affecting their education and future prospects.
