Highland Clearances - Forcible Eviction
A mixture of dramatisation, voiceover and old paintings tells of the aggressive methods used by the Duke of Sutherland and his factor Patrick Sellar to force clan communities off their land in the Highland Clearances. At first, notices of eviction were given to residents. Later on in 1814 houses were burned down. The role of government intervention is also included.
Use to study how Highlanders were treated. Compare with situations in the world today. How are refugees treated in Scotland, Britain and globally? Students could look at the role of government and law to protect consumers, tenants and others.
