Key Info

  • Duration: 04:28
  • Through the magic of time travel we are taken on a journey which marks the key moments in the development of the guitar from 1520 to the present day. The history focuses on five specific historical periods in which there were significant moments in the guitar's development, beginning with a minstrel playing a lute through to a present day amplified guitar. With each period we are entertained by short musical extracts. Clear close-ups provide the young viewer with visual as well as audio references.

Ideas for use in class
  • Ideal material to encourage older pupils to conduct their own research using books or websites. Pupils can construct their own time lines, choosing their own dates and historical periods and add more detail to fill in the gaps between the five historical moments in the clip. Building on the time line pupils could include other historical contexts such as buildings. Find out the names of some composers who wrote music especially for the guitar. Put these into the time line and match them with the development of the instrument.
