Key Info
  • Flooding in the Netherlands
  • Duration: 02:48
  • The greatest threat of flooding in the Netherlands has traditionally come from the sea. The Dutch have created vast sea defences and have successfully reclaimed land from the sea, reducing the risk from floods. More recently, rivers have been responsible for flooding in the Netherlands as people have increasingly built upon floodplain beside the river. The source of the River Rhine lies in Switzerland. As it flows through Germany it's joined by many tributaries and increases in volume.

Ideas for use in class
  • This clip could be used when looking at the causes of river flooding. Following the activity, students could be given a map with potential development sites marked on it. They could then choose the best site for a new development and use the video to justify the case for not building on low-lying floodplains.
