  • The Russians shocked the world by successfully crashing a probe into the Moon in 1959. Luna 2 was the first probe that successfully crashed into the Moon. However, the Russians had no way of monitoring the probe to see that it landed successfully on target, so they told British scientists working at Jodrell Bank how to monitor its progress.
