Edward Kennedy visits Checkpoint Charlie (audio)
Edward Kennedy decided to visit East Berlin to learn more about the Communist country. No American official had done this before as the Americans only dealt with the Russians. This radio broadcast illustrates the tangled web of bureaucracy during the Cold War. First broadcast on 26 June 1963 and published as part of BBC Archive Collections: bbc.co.uk/archive/. Please note this clip is only available in Flash.
Cross curricular with citizenship – students can discuss identity and what information should be on a passport, who should see it and in what circumstances.
