Key Info
  • Designing Copenhagen city centre
  • Around forty years ago officials of Copenhagen considered it had lost its way as a European City. As a result the city was successfully redesigned and subsequently awarded first European City of the Year by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Architect George Ferguson was RIBA President at the time and visits Copenhagen to demonstrate why the award was made. We learn how the city centre design caters for a mix of pedestrians, bikes and cars, large and small shops and accommodation. It is described as an 'urban village green' providing diversity in public spaces, streets and housing. This clip has subtitles available in Flash.

Ideas for use in class
  • Provides an illustration of how a modern city is designed through community involvement. Following the clip students could be asked to produce a spider diagram demonstrating any concerns they have about the community they live in. Carry out an independent enquiry on issues which exist in their own community including ideas on how to solve them. Research the community's concerns around traffic, safety, infrastructure, crime, pollution and local services and propose ideas for regeneration which will resolve the concerns.
