Key Info
  • Darwinian natural selection
  • Duration: 02:40
  • Richard Dawkins explains that the Darwinian theory is the only known theory that best describes why plants and animals are so good at doing what they do. They give the illusion of having been designed. He then explains that people mistakenly believe that evolution happens by chance, whereas according to Darwin it occurs due to natural selection. Evolution is the non-random selection of those animals that are most successful in their particular evolutionary line.

Ideas for use in class
  • Some background understanding of Darwin's theory of evolution would be helpful prior to viewing. Ask students to agree questions that the theory raises before watching the clip. After viewing, how would Richard Dawkins answer these? What is meant by the 'illusion of purpose or design'? Ask students for their own thoughts and experiences of this in nature. Do his thoughts on this disprove the existence of God?
