Creating buildings that can withstand earthquakes
Dallas Campbell from the BBC One series 'Bang Goes The Theory' visits the San Andreas fault in California and experiences a simulated earthquake. In preparation for the earthquake they expect, called 'The Big One', local engineers are building the new Bay Bridge that forms a key part of the city's transport infrastructure to withstand a major earthquake. Dallas learns how the bridge is being built in sections that can move independently of each other to absorb and dissipate energy and therefore prevent collapse. The four towers are also capable of independent movement and can still support the bridge if one of them collapses.

Could be used to illustrate how engineers are dealing with the challenges of constructing large buildings in areas prone to earthquakes, and to show how energy can be absorbed during an earthquake to prevent total destruction of structures. Students could then research whether examples of these modern structures have been proven to be effective.
