  • Dallas Campbell from the BBC One series 'Bang Goes The Theory' visits the San Andreas fault in California and experiences a simulated earthquake. In preparation for the earthquake they expect, called 'The Big One', local engineers are building the new Bay Bridge that forms a key part of the city's transport infrastructure to withstand a major earthquake. Dallas learns how the bridge is being built in sections that can move independently of each other to absorb and dissipate energy and therefore prevent collapse. The four towers are also capable of independent movement and can still support the bridge if one of them collapses. First broadcast on BBC One on 'Bang Goes the Theory' in March 2011.
