Key Info
Ideas for use in class
  • Ask the students how Crichton Smith helps us to understand Mrs Scott. Point them towards the way in which the novel is structured and ask them to explain what they think the term 'flashback' means and why it is used. (It helps us to engage with Mrs Scott more as we are invited to view her past self and her present self, and therefore helps us to understand her more fully). Ask them to jot down the former character of Mrs Scott and how she is presented in the present, then to think about any ways in which she has changed. Students will hopefully realise that she has become a more tolerant and accepting character.
