  • In this animation Captain Calamity uses his knowledge about shapes, reading scales and measuring accurately to win his quest. Princess Amber is imprisoned by the Evil Ruler. To rescue her Captain Calamity must bring back a bar of gold, buried treasure on the Sandy Shore. He has a key which fits only one box in a room of a thousand boxes. By sorting the attributes of the differently shaped boxes he finds the one which contains a treasure map. At the seaside the challenge is to work out the size of a pace. A conversion chart is found on the treasure map so the distances can be accurately measured. Captain Calamity is successful in his quest.

Ideas for use in class
  • This clip would be fun to play to support learning about shape. It would also be helpful to reinforce the need for a key or conversion chart on a map to provide the scale and to ensure accurate measurement. In either case the clip could be played at the start of a lesson or it might be used as part of the plenary.
