  • Duration: 05:04
  • Barnaby Bear is preparing to climb Moel Famau in Wales. Barnaby puts on all the right clothing and a good pair of walking boots. He checks his location by reading the grid references and locates the lookout point he is heading to. Climbing the mountain is hard work. There are 'Waymarkers' on posts to help walkers find their way. Barnaby meets Patrick, a country park warden. They discuss the Countryside Code and how quickly the weather can change on the mountain. Barnaby has a whistle with him to attract attention if he needs to and his Dad has a mobile phone so they can phone 999 and ask for Mountain Rescue if they have any difficulties. Ideas for use in class
  • As well as learning about the pleasures of walking in mountain areas this clip highlights some of the possible dangers. It provides suggestions for what people should wear and do in preparation for a walk in the hills and mountains. This is a good starting point for lots of different discussions about aspects such as health and safety, the Countryside Code and understanding how quickly the weather can change in such locations. It also illustrates very positive reasons for being able to read grid references on a map.
