Ash and Aircraft
An explanation of how airborne volcanic ash not only affects the jet engines of aeroplanes, but also affects the instrumentation. A pitot tube is used to measure an aircraft's speed relative to the surrounding air, but it can be clogged by volcanic ash, making it very hard to measure the speed that an aeroplane is travelling.
