Charismatic prayer and worship in South Africa
Charismatic Christians from South African emphasise the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives, and Christians in Johannesburg gather out of the city to meet for a prayer vigil. The 12th Apostolic Church broke away from the Protestant mainstream to start their own African Christianity, with their own reading of the Bible. The prayer and worship demonstrates their belief in the Holy Spirit. Christians talk about how the Holy Spirit gives them confidence and enables them to live without fear even in the lawless parts of the city. The presenter is prayed for and reflects on the experience.
Students could identify five ways in which belief in the Holy Spirit might have an impact on the lives of these Christians. They could compare the worship here with other clips showing charismatic worship and present a list of the features. They could compare this with the description of worship in Paul's first letter to the Corinthians (chs 12-15).
