Dunadd Fort: Stronghold of Dalriada
Aerial shots illustrate Dunadd Fort's advantageous defensive position. Kings of Dalriada would come to Dunadd if they were under attack. A fort was built on top of the natural stone. The main type of combat was hand to hand. Each new king came to Dunadd to be proclaimed and placed his foot into the carving of a footprint on one of the rocks.
Ask pupils to suggest why Dunadd was a good spot to build a fort. Ask them to research how it was defended and what weapons were used at that time. Pupils could make drawings of how the Scotti's fort and weapons might have looked.
Explain why we are not sure about what actually happened at Dunadd. Discuss the carving of the foot as a source of evidence. Ask pupils to speculate on what the ceremony may have been like, then encourage them to act it out in groups.
